This book was later adapted into an animated film of the same name in 1993, produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblimation animation studio and distributed by Universal Pictures.

The animated film is considered to be somewhat dark. The light-heartedness portion of the film is evident in the earlier scenes; seeing the dinosaurs from the past kindly interacting with the children of today brings smiles to the audience's faces. Seeing the dinosauric characters take part in the Thanksgiving Day Parade, for example, is among the many light-hearted scenes in the film. However, when the villain Professor ScrewEyes, with a screw that replaces one of his eyes, as well as many costumed performers parading about as a menagerie of monsters, are introduced in the film, things become considerably darker, and the light-hearted feel of the movie is somewhat lost.

The children's book released after the animated film's release has no connection with the book of which the movie itself is based on.
